STEFANIE TONEY GRAETER

Intersex People Exist

Stefanie Graeter (she/her)

In addition to anthropology, I am also an intersex person and advocate. I identify as an intersex woman with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (with xy chromosomes to boot!) My experience as an intersex person inspires my academic interests in medical knowledge, embodiment, science, and objectivity. As an advocate, I support activism to end non-consensual, medically-unnecessary surgery on intersex children (see the work of InterAct and the Intersex Justice Project). I am also part of a growing movement to make intersex life visible to the public, because there's really nothing wrong with being intersex. Intersex people and their bodies nonetheless remain pathologized, hidden, and misunderstood. To that end, this part of my website is for assembling my favorite resources, articles, and videos on intersex life and politics for other intersex people, our allies, and any interested folks that stumble upon this page. More content soon!

I am very happy to include as my first post a TED talk by the incredible Emily Quinn. Emily and I share the same intersex condition, CAIS. She has balls, spiritually and corporally, while I only (maybe) have the former ( mine were surgically removed when I was a kid). I am so inspired by Emily's playful and informative style of communication and political speech. I would like to offer my thoughts on the content, but I wanted to first and foremost get this video up, hot off the internet.
